The competition for an NBA expansion franchise is not unlike the intense bidding wars among cities vying for new businesses or corporate headquarter relocations. Atlanta journalist Drape scripts the events and machinations leading to Charlotte's emergence from the pack as (along with Miami) the first addition to the NBA since 1980, and then follows the team's progress throughout its maiden season. Emerging from this are some telling individual portraits and shrewd marketing strategies used to prime already rabid basketball fans that resulted in Charlotte's leading the NBA in attendance last year despite an expectably poor season. Drape is less effective covering the Hornets throughout the basketball year; David Halberstam's The Breaks of the Game ( LJ 11/15/81) is still unsurpassed for a yearly team chronicle. A game-by-game summary is also included.
