About the Author:
Hortense Calisher has written more than twenty books. Past president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and of PEN, she has been a National Book Award finalist three times and has won an O. Henry Award, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship. She lives in New York City.
From Library Journal:
Told in a retrospective, conversational style, this emotionally charged story tells the tale of a "modern girl" of the 1950s as she recalls her coming of age in a small New Jersey town. The novel revolves around the return to town of a famous playwright, Craig Towle, his marriage to a very young woman (Bobby Soxer), and the intellectual and sexual awakenings he causes in the town, its people, and, in particular, a girl on the edge of womanhood. Calisher has a gift for evoking both the American small town intricacies and the inner workings of an adolescent's heart. Her prose effectively communicates the often-lost, intimate moments that daily lives consist of, and a languid sensuality pervades her book. Recommnded for most fiction collections.
