TOM GLAZER'S/SONGS - Softcover

PreSchool-Grade 6 This revision of Tom Glazer's Treasury of Folk Songs (J. R. Pub., 1964) has several improvements. Most obvious are the illustrations. O'Brien's pen-and-ink drawings are much more appealing and less cluttered than the previous illustrations, and he captures the theme and emotion of individual songs with humorous simplicity. The table of contents is much easier to read. The well-known children's songs range from nursery rhymes to Christmas carols; two songs (``Davy Crockett'' and ``Did You Ever See a Lassie?'') have been deleted. Many of the songs are available elsewhere, such as in Singing Bee! (Lothrop, 1982) and The Fireside Book of Favorite American Songs (S. & S., 1954; o.p.). However, Glazer's collection is a well-packaged one that should not be overlooked. Each song has been arranged for piano and includes the guitar chords. Unique to Glazer's collection are the one- and two-line histories given with each song. These add a scholarly note to the collection and can be used effectively as introductory material during group singing.
