Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. London. Secker and Warburg. 1999. Originally published in 1990, this is the first printing of the re-issue in 1999 (full number line including 1 to copyright page). Hard Cover. Medium 8Vo. 6.5" x 9.3". ([6.5cm x 23.5cm] approx. 376 pp. Black boards with silver titles in cursive to the spine panel. The bottom rear edge adjacent to the spine junction has sustained a small bump but it is barely noticeable. The spine ends are a little softened but the book has no other wear. Inscribed by the author to the title page. Wraparound artwork to glossy unclipped dust wrapper by Chris Shamwana. Some very minor creasing at the spine ends but again, minimally visible. Book and jacket are both very near fine. When the spoilt and haughty Dona Constanza tries to divert a river to fill her swimming pool, she starts a running battle with the locals. The skirmishes are so severe that the Government dispatches a squadron of soliders led by the fat, brutal and stupid Figueras to deal with them. Despite visiting plagues of laughing fits and giant cats upon the troops, the villagers know that to escape the cruel and unusual tortures planned for them, they must run. Thus they plan to head for the mountains and start a new convivial civilization. This is the author's first book and won two prizes in 1991 and 1992. The dust jacket will be protected with a new inert archival sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional photographs.
