Emily searches for a best friend and worries about the 40 cents she owes at the library. When she becomes lost at the school picnic, her thoughts turn to whether or not the others will leave her in the woods. Each episode is well drawn and credible. Character development is not a strong point in this beginning novel, but considering the length, Giff has maintained a good balance between characterization and plot development.
