PreS-Gr 5 Dinosaurs are always better in 3-D, and these exquisitely illustrated and mechanized pop-up books make dinosaurs gnash their teeth, the ocean-bound Zeuglodon splash right off the page, and pterosaurs fly before your eyes. The animals look and move realistically, and sport colorful spots and stripes that dispel any illusions of dinosaur drab. The texts, while not quite as informative as Berger's Prehistoric Mammals: a New World (1986) or Moseley's Dinosaurs: a Lost World (1984; both Putnam), provide pronunciation and basic information about the animals' size, temperament, and habitat. But the emphasis here is not on research, but on presenting a plethora of dynamic creatures that pop to life with the turn of the page. No question that many of these paper replicas will meet their fates mutilated by small hands, but the quality of this series makes the risk worthwhile. Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
