Hercules: Hero of the Night Sky - Softcover

A straightforward chapter-book retelling of some of the myths of Hercules, notable as much for what it skips as for what it includes: Moore relates Hercules's birth (though not why Hera hates him), covers his temper (though not his madness-induced killing of his family), and approximately four of his labors (not twelve), ending with his ascension to constellation status. There is no attempt at character development, and glossing over some of the more unsavory aspects of the myth results in confusing gaps, e.g., Hera is angry and implacable for no apparent reason. Better to spare readers this version and aim them, instead, at some of the sophisticated picture-book treatments available, or--no surprise- -the D'Aulaires. Grade 2-4?From fighting off snakes in his cradle to slaying the nine-headed Hydra, Hercules is shown to be a valiant warrior. Readers are briefly introduced to Greek mythology as the struggle between the hero and jealous Hera unfolds. In 11 short chapters illustrated with line drawings, Hercules performs his tasks, gets married, and is immortalized among the stars. Although the book does not delve deeply into all 12 labors, it is a serviceable undertaking for early and reluctant readers. A brief explanation of constellations named for Greek myths is included. With the interest sure to be generated by Disney's summer release of a film of the same title, this edition will fill some of those requests.?Angela J.
