Synopsis: When Turner painted this masterpiece in the 1840's the railway mania was at its height in England. The great Western Railway, on which an engine of the Firefly class is seen crossing one of Brunel's bridges, had just been extended to Bristol and Exeter, becoming the longest line in the world. John Gage contextualises Turner's attitudes to the railway age; his debt to Rembrandt and the Baroque and 'the failure of an idea'. Seller Inventory # ABE-1471447068037
