After a short prologue that sets the scene, he succinctly covers the U.S. and her allies' actions and reactions during their conduct of political and martial strategies and tactics throughout 1945. The contemporary relevance of those not-so-distant events is made clear by the author, for it was the Allied victory that brought about "the growing distrust between communist Soviet Russia and the Western democracies" that ushered in the nuclear age and the cold war. The presentation is enhanced by the use of primary-source material taken from newspapers, magazines, advertisements, anecdotes, reminiscences, etc.; the day-by-day journal-like entries; and the addenda of short biographical sketches of leaders, a chronology, and maps.
