Celebrated explorer Henry M. Stanley, famous for capping off an expedition through central Africa with a greeting to Dr. Livingstone, led a life of bravery, dangerous risk, and fierce determination. Frank McLynn shows in his biography that Stanley's journeys along the length of the Congo River and around Lakes Tanganyika and Victoria revealed a disregard for life and a masochistic side. McLynn traces the roots of both the bravado and the savage behavior, beginning with the explorer's Dickensian childhood in a Welsh workhouse and culminating in his clashes with the Royal Geographic Society and the American newspaper magnate who financed Stanley's visit to Livingstone.

From the Publisher:
The celebrated African explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley was one of the most fascinating of the late–Victorian adventurers. Born into poverty and illegitimacy, he survived a series of incredible adventures at sea and in the U.S., emerging as a talented journalist. His writing led to a commission to find David Livingstone, the greatest single feat in African exploration. Yet behind the public man lay a disturbed personality. A pathological liar with sadomasochistic tendencies, Stanley’s achievements exacted a high human cost. As Frank McLynn’s fine study shows, his foundation of the Congo Free State on behalf of Leopold II of Belgium as well as the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition were both dubious enterprises that tarnished Stanley’s reputation and revealed his complex—and often troubling—relationship with Africa. Professor Frank McLynn’s most recent books include Napoleon, 1066, and Wagons West.
From the Inside Flap:
Behind the public man, one of the most fascinating late Victorian adventurers and probably the greatest of African explorers, lay a disturbed personality. A pathological liar with sadomasochistic tendencies, Stanley’s achievements exacted a high human cost.

Book Description 227 x 153 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 411 + (v), incl. index; monochrome illustrations; maps. Near-fine condition. "[This biography] of Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) concentrates on his life as an illegitimate and adolescent shunted off to a workhouse and on his early career as an explorer, particularly on his first two African expeditions - the first to find David Livingstone and the second down the long stretch of the Congo to its mouth . McLynn seeks to expose the reasons why a man of such indomitable will, technical and tactical ability, and personal bravery could behave so savagely." - Economist. Seller Inventory # 10652
