K-Gr 3--Bryant-Mole's series entries offer information in a simple, lively, easy-to-understand manner. Both books present facts and then ask questions or suggest projects that children might do on their own. Unfortunately, some of the full-color photographs lack crispness. Nevertheless, these titles provide relevant and intriguing material that should stimulate hands-on activities. A "More Things to Do" page and "Notes for Parents and Teachers" are appended; the latter explains activities, concepts, and terms. Although there is an abundance of quality works available on flowers, e.g., Plants (DK, 1992), Millicent Selsam and Joyce Hunt's A First Look at the World of Plants (Walker, 1978), and Patricia Lauber's From Flower to Flower (1986; o.p.) and Seeds (1991, both Crown), there are virtually no titles on soil, so this one is a welcome addition.
