Pam Spencer Holley is a Past-President of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and noted author in the field of YA librarianship. She is a former school librarian and Coordinator of School Libraries for Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. Holley is also a former chair of Best Books for Young Adults and the 2004 Printz Award.

The meat of the volume lies in the fifth and sixth chapters, which are lengthy annotated bibliographies of both nonfiction and fiction titles appearing on either the “Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers” or “Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults” list between 1999 and 2008. The selections range from the classic to the immediately contemporary and are guaranteed to appeal to a broad range of young adults. The lists are in alphabetical order by author, but the theme-oriented book lists in chapter 7 (some of which are available online) give a useful subject classification.
