The Orange in the Orange, a novella and two stories by Fielding Dawson draws on his experiences as a prison teacher. In the novella, The Orange in the Orange, Dawson peels away at himself, in the hero-teacher character, with zeal and more deeply than he has before. Sure, the setting, in prison, where he teaches writing, kind of forces the issue. A prison building is a spectacle for all of us outside, but inside everything is detail. Detail requires alertness, and in prison there are penalties for lack of alertness. The teacher of prisoners is a spectacle until he or she proves otherwise.

According to Mr. Robert Bové in his review of The Orange in the Orange, This book goes way against the grain of the entertainment culture, of industrial-strength spectacle... In The Orange in the Orange, the mind is working overtime, but the reader who works along with writer gets paid time-and-a-half. Reading Dawson, one is never ashamed of having idled away one's time on literary bon-bons.

About the Author:
Fielding Dawson's fiction, essays and art/literary criticism appeared in newspapers, magazines and anthologies in the U.S. and abroad for over thirty years. During his lifetime he published 23 books--stories, novels, memoirs and poems. He attended Black Mountain College from 1949 to 1953, where he studied with such writers and artists as Charles Olson and Franz Kline. In 1956 he moved to New York City, continuing to write and create paintings, drawings and collages. In 1984 he began to teach writing workshops in U.S. prisons, and later also worked with at-risk teenagers in alternative high schools. Fielding was chairman of the PEN Prison Writing Committee and director of the PEN Prison Writing Workshop Program. His literary archives are held by the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
From Library Journal:
A writing teacher's prison classroom is the setting for both the title novella and one of the two stories in this collection by the prolific Dawson, who?as chair of the PEN Prison Writing Committee?knows whereof he speaks. Though Dawson delivers his personal journalism here in a guileless, elliptical style that takes some getting used to, his clunky sentences often rise to the level of prose-poetry as he bares his own soul to get his young inmate-students to reveal theirs. "Freedom is just another word for a different kind of prison," he writes, reflecting on life "outside." "There's a joint with walls and bars for every one of us, in every town, city, state." Recommended for fiction collections.?David Sowd, formerly with Stark Cty. District Lib., Canton, Ohio
