Not since Mari Sandoz wrote The Horsecatcher has there been a more powerful young reader book about early American Indian life. Native Americans of the North American plains are generally depicted as horsemen, but that is only a recent part of their culture. Based on historical facts and legends, this book offers high adventure and accurate information about the 18th century Blackfoot Nation before the horse culture began.

The feelings and attitudes of the heroine, Spotted Flower, are skillfully brought in focus as Spotted Flower finds a ponokomita (horse) on the Norther Rockies plains in the 1730s. Cautiously she makes friends with the beast and leads it to her village.

It's just the right blend of story and fact that will delight younger readers. The splendid cover and illustrations by American Indian artist Louise Ogemahgeshig Fischer bring the story extra life.

Spotted Flower and the Ponokomita takes place in the 1730s on the Northern Rockies. That was when the horse was introduced into the cultures of the region--cultures that had existed for centuries without horses. The book gives information about the lifestyle that was about to end, while offering an adventure to which young people can relate (adults, too).

From the Publisher:
Not since Mari Sandoz wrote THE HORSECATCHER has there been a more powerful young reader book about early American Indian life. Based on historic facts and legends, this exciting adventure takes place among the Blackfeet Nation over 250 years ago. The feelings and attitudes of the heroine, Spotted Flower, are skillfully brought in focus for the middle grade readers.

Excellent for North American Indian studies.

From the Author:
I find myself always involved with young people, from directing a choir, to coaching soccer for eight years, to my current volunteer work at an after-school facility. I have yet to complete a fictional piece of writing that doesn't have one young person prominently featured. I also try to retain in my own life the spontaneity I find so refreshing in young people. I hope this is reflected in my work.

Much of my writing has been to convey to readers information that has been overlooked, ignored or of which they have been deprived. With SPOTTED FLOWER, I wanted young people to realize that the American Indian horse cultures of the North American Plains are recent occurrences, and history (fact and fiction) often overlooks the original cultures of indigenous peoples who have populated this hemisphere for countless centuries. I found great pleasure not only in writing this book, but in remembering old stories I had heard and reading new material to give the characters and circumstances vivid imagery.
