Did you know that termites build towers as tall as houses? Or that ogre-faced spiders throw net traps over their prey? Whether it's to gather food, build shelter or attract a mate, animals work in unexpected ways. Kids can try activities that demonstrate some surprising animal skills, like blowing bubbles the way a spittlebug does to hide itself from predators. Or mastering the half hitch and running knots that the weaverbird ties (with its feet!) when it builds a nest. Using concise language and realistic illustrations, this title in the Animal Behavior series takes a resourceful approach to exploring animal life.

About the Author:
Award-winning author and teacher Etta Kaner enjoys writing nonfiction for both children and adults. Her books include Animals Migrating, Animal Talk , Animal Groups and other titles in the Animal Behavior series, as well as four titles in the Kids Can Read series. She is also author of the Exploring the Elements and Have You Ever Seen series. She lives in Toronto.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 2-4-Seven chapters focus on the survival techniques of several animals, ranging from the common honeybee to the yellowhead jawfish, briefly discussing their shelters, methods of gathering food, or mating rituals. Kaner piques readers' curiosity with catchy section headings and by asking questions. Each of the chapters includes at least one related activity requiring readily available materials. "All in knots," for example, illustrates how to tie three different knots used by the weaverbird when it builds a nest. A piece of rope is all that is needed. Large print, a pleasing layout, and complementary watercolor illustrations create a visually appealing book. A fun matching game and a challenging quiz are included. Kaner's book lacks the depth necessary for assignments, but will be enjoyed by young animal lovers.
