Native Americans of the Northeast (Indigenous Peoples of North America)

Gr 8 Up-Kallen presents a full, rich picture of the life of the Indians of the Northeast. Both historical and modern perspectives are presented. Many aspects of Native existence are extensively covered, such as daily life, religious practices, preparations for battles, spirituality, and social customs. There are many black-and-white photographs, reproductions, and drawings. Frequent quotations from primary documents lend a compelling immediacy to the text. The author is sympathetic to, yet realistic about, Indian causes. Balanced presentations are made on such subjects as interactions and conflicts between Indians and whites, and intertribal disputes, both modern and in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Modern reservation life and the tribes' political concerns are treated evenhandedly. While the ideas presented are occasionally complex, the writing is straightforward and uncomplicated.
