“Artley’s good-humored, vividly colored cartoon art, featuring comically hyperbolic expressions on the faces of characters―human and bovine alike―provides the entertainment.”
—Publishers Weekly
How would someone squeeze a 1,200-pound cow out of a silo? That is the humorous problem Una Belle Townsend solves in Grady's in the Silo. When Grady, a big red Hereford cow, feels sick one day, she is given a shot. Upset, she tries to escape to the pasture but finds herself mysteriously stuck inside of a large, gray silo. No one can figure how to get her out.
The story takes many charming twists and turns as people from around the world try to help Bill, the farmer, save his cow. The difficulty is getting Grady out without hurting her. The many suggestions told to Bill are both outrageous and funny. Finally, a reporter from Denver comes and saves the day with a creative idea and a bucket of grease. The story shows how teamwork combined with a little patience and perseverance can solve even the strangest problems.
Grady's in the Silo takes place in the author's hometown, Yukon, Oklahoma. It is based on a true story that happened in 1949 and is an important part of Yukon folklore. This is a unique tale overflowing with Midwest charm and a rural sensibility.
