Forget celebrities, at the Gay Parade After Party on the Hudson River off Christopher Street, money or no money the people are the stars & all are welcome to get down & celebrate their gay pride. Yet, on the other side of the world the city government of Moscow canceled yet again their scheduled 2011 Gay Pride Parade even after being fined by the European Court of Human Rights for not allowing one previously. Eastern Europe as a whole has some of the most repressive countries in the world regarding Homosexual rights even though they portray themselves as modern states. But once transplanted to New York City, all that homophobia becomes old world nonsense for a sexy Russian Girl exploring the Gay Parade After Party at the birthplace of the worldwide Gay Pride Movement in Greenwich Village, New York City.

While being gay in Eastern Europe is taboo, the rap & hip-hop community in America is going threw its own homosexual acceptance growing process. Recently rapper Lil B titled his new album I m Gay even though he isn t in an attempt to break sexual orientation barriers in the rap community & reportedly lost fans & received death threats. As seen in this book, there is no lack of gay pride among black Americans wearing Michael Jordan sneakers & flipping gang h& signals at the Gay Parade After Party in New York.

Russian Girl at the Gay Parade follows humble Russian Girl, Olena Ierega as she takes a tour of Greenwich Village with West Village native photographer, Garvey Rich, to capture amazing street fashion & spontaneous pictures that have nothing to do with celebrities & everything to do with the true face of the alive & kicking Gay Pride Movement in New York City. Featuring an amazing display of homemade fashion mixed with pride, joy & a tour de force fashionable Sneaker display.

Author & photographer Garvey Rich tells his story of what it was like growing up as a boy in Greenwich Village when the Stonewall Riots sparked the Gay Pride Movement & marched down the block he lived. Telling a usually unheard of perspective of what it was like growing up a straight male just a few blocks from the Gay Mecca of America, Christopher Street. He has dedicated the book to his Gr&mother Jenny whose family fought their way out of the pogroms of Russia to get to New York City, juxtaposing his family s fight for freedom to the Gay Pride Movement.

Russian Girl, Olena Ierega, writes about the pervasive homophobia still prevalent in her hometown in the Ukraine.

Russian Girl at the Gay Parade is Art Directed & Illustrated by art director Mark Weinburg, known for his work with artist James Rizzi, photographer Lynn Goldsmith & album covers for The Ramones, The Clash, Burning Spear & Naughty by Nature Logo & covers to name a few.

Proceeds from this full color photo book will be donated to charities that help Gay Youth forced to leave their homes or abused by their parents due to their sexual orientation.

Review:
Black Book MagazineBy Ken Scrudato

In a fortuitous bit of a timing following the recent inaugural 2011 Gay Pride Parade in Moscow, which, even though both gay and anti-gay activists were arrested in the ensuing protests, still smacked of State-sanctioned discrimination, a flamboyant new photo book titled Russian Girl at the Gay Parade After Party has accomplished the rarest of feats: combining decadent fun with poignant social commentary. Former downtown New York nightlife-PR-guru-turned-photographer Garvey Rich s original plan was to photograph model Olena Ierega on the backstreets of the West Village one night last summer. But the pair stumbled upon the street parties in the aftermath of the 2010 Gay Pride Parade--and the rest is history. My grandparents escaped the Russian Pogroms in the early 1900 s, Rich explains, so I ve always thought about exploring my roots by photographing sexy first generation Russian girls in New York City. The book happened coincidentally. Rich s vivid, provocatively glamorous photos, as much or more than any that have come before, wildly convey the sexual and sartorial freedoms associated with New York as a bastion of tolerance in the post-Stonewall decades, which have come to be most vividly realized at the annual NYC parade--taking place this year on Sunday, June 26. And while the photo captions are lighthearted and humorous, the accompanying text gives the images a more serious context. Rich writes about growing up in the West Village and watching with fascination as the gay rights movement was first taking shape; and Ierega laments how systematic and widespread the homophobia remains back in the Ukraine and Russia. The book will also be available as an app. Rich is hoping it will actually generate sales--and perhaps even controversy--over in the Motherland, especially as the text will also be offered in Russian. I think the pictures look just as good on the iPhone or iPad screen as they do printed, he reckons. For a fraction of the price of the printed book, somebody in Russia can download it and read it just as easily as somebody in New York. The app also enables the book to be more interactive. Proceeds from Russian Girl at the Gay Parade After Party will go to charities that shelter gay youth who have been shunned by their families. --Black Book Magazine
