Luke Hunter is a conservation biologist with the New York–based Wildlife Conservation Society, where he heads the Global Carnivore Program. Hunter, the author of Cheetah, has conducted fieldwork on large cats in Africa since 1992, focusing on efforts to restore species to areas of their former range. Gerald Hinde spent thirty years running a family motor business before shedding his business cares in 1989 for his first love―life in the African bush. He has won numerous photographic awards including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award, and was the AFGA Wildlife Awards Overall Winner in 2000. His photographs have been published widely in national and international magazines and appear on postcards, on calendars, and in the books Africa's Big Five, Leopard, and An African Experience.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in African wildlife, in the interactions between predators and prey, and in the whole topic of wildlife conservation. It informs at all levels, and should certainly be required reading for those who would prefer to see African cats along the barrel of a gun.

Although the writing in this book is well done and will be easily understood by the educated lay person and undergraduate students, the real story is in the full-color photographs found within this volume... Once this book is opened it is difficult to put down. This work is appropriate for university and college collections with ecology and zoology collections.
