About the Author:
Philip Wells appears as 'The Fire Poet' in theatres and churches, pubs and castles, prisons, hospitals and schools, and has been praised by the Evening Standard as 'the foremost performance poet in England'. He has published two collections of adult poetry. Daddy Island is his first children's book and has proved to be extremely popular. Niki Daly has been illustrating and writing children's books for over twenty years. He has a long list of awards to his name including the prestigious 1995 New York Times Certificate of Excellence for Why the Sun and Moon Live in the Sky. Niki lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

Ages 2-5. Safe at home with his dad, a small boy can stretch tall and fly high on all kinds of imaginary adventures. He can be a storm, "very angry and wild and proud." Listening to a story, he can be a rock, "strong and steady, steady and still." He can be as fierce and loving as a bear, or he can whisper very, very quietly like the sand "in the starlight by the sea." Wells' simple, four-line rhyming poems are playful and dreamy. Under each verse a small, affectionate picture shows the boy preparing for bed with his dad; opposite there's a swirling, full-page illustration in ink and bright watercolor of their surreal, imaginary play. Daly makes the seaside an active part of the story: the circle of waves and sky is like the father's embrace that gives the child the strength to be strong and independent.
