About the Author:
Jean 'Binta' Breeze is a poet, actress, dancer, choreographer, film writer and theatre director. She has released four other poetry books, Riddym Ravings (Race Today), Spring Cleaning (Virago), and On the Edge of an Island and The Arrival of Brighteye (both Bloodaxe), as well as several records, including Tracks with the Dennis Bovell Dub Band and Riding On De Riddym: selected spoken works (CD from 57 Productions). She has performed her work throughout the world, including tours of the Caribbean, North America, Europe, South East Asia and Africa, and now divides her time between Jamaica and Leicester. She received a NESTA Award in 2003.

Breeze is also a dancer, choreographer, actress, and storyteller, and the five monologues of this poetic family saga are theatrically lively. The first--half verse, half prose--is that of an Englishwoman come to Jamaica just before emancipation there in 1838; the others--three in prose, the last returning to verse--are spoken by her mixed-race daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, and great-great-great-granddaughter. Each speaker, as well as the silent great-great-granddaughter, is young and/or not married to the father when her successor is born, and each contends with male violence, often from her less-intelligent and -capable mate. Each speech is called a figure after one part of a set of dance steps; each dance figure is more complex than the preceding one, and the affect of each successive speech follows suit. Valiant as these women appear, the first goes mad and the others abandon their dreams upon pregnancy--except for the final woman, who, like her English foremother, also battles schizophrenia.
