Here, he chronicles adventures in Morocco, the Scilly Isles, Shetland, Ireland, India and Papua New Guinea. In the last, he accompanied a BBC crew to photograph birds of paradise. Oddie pokes gentle fun at twitchers?those obsessed with seeing rare birds; he disdains guided tours, preferring the company of one or two friends. In the Scillies, Shetland and Ireland, he seeks American birds that have crossed the Atlantic. In India he visits a reserve where a friend was killed by a tiger, and goes tiger-watching from the back of an elephant. Conservationist Oddie is known in Britain for his role in a long-running TV comedy series. In this book he takes the reader on a bird-watching tour to such diverse places as Morocco, the Isles of Scilly, India, Ireland, the Shetland Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Oddie calls the book a collection of "traveler's tales" of the pursuit of birds. He recounts the many species of birds he saw, as well as some of the people doing the watching. Oddie relates some bizarre incidents along the way in a humorous vein; consequently the book will be enjoyed more by armchair travelers looking for laughs than by serious birders.
