From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1. These simple picture books about cooking incorporate a recipe into the texts?Grandma is great because she makes cookies and sister makes super muffins. The notes following each tale encourage parents to help children describe textures and changes through cooking activities, explain how the recipe works, e.g., the chemical reactions that cause muffins to rise, and provide directions so that readers can re-create the action in their own kitchens. Unfortunately, reading the play-by-play of making cookies doesn't make for an exciting story: "When it got really stretchy, Grandma made it into a ball and put it in the fridge." Although the results are supposed to be a surprise, most children will know that the characters are making muffins by the second page. Some action is supplied in the cartoon illustrations that show the antics of the pets and stuffed animals.?Sharon R. Pearce, San Antonio Public Library, TX
