About the Author:
After extensive teaching experience in all grade levels, including special education, and her doctoral studies fat Northwestern University, Dr. McCarthy developed an instructional model to connect to all types of learners. She was convinced that the diversity of learners called for an all encompassing learning cycle. She drew on the research of Jung, Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey, Lewin and Kolb to create an instructional system that would progress through the complete learning cycle with strategies that would appeal to all learners. This innovative approach, the 4MAT system, was the basis for her founding her company, About Learning, in 1979. The 4MAT System is used for professional development in two major fields: education and corporate training. It applies to two levels within these organizations, the teaching and training levels and the administrative and leadership levels. 4MAT is a powerful system for improving Instructional design, team processing, leadership skills, communication, conflict resolution, decision making, problem solving and creativity. Dr. McCarthy encourages organizations to use multiple methods of problem solving and communicating to help tap into the full potential of each and every employee. She is a prolific author and presenter and has conducted workshops and keynote sessions on effective learning at renowned organizations worldwide including school districts across the US and Canada,as well as in higher education and government. She is a nationally known author on instructional design. She has written seven books including The 4MAT System. 4MAT in Action, About Teaching, About Learning, Hold on You Lost Me: Using Learning Styles to Create Training that Sticks, and her most recent book: The Learning Cycle, the 21st Century and Millennial Learners: Who They are and How to Teach Them.
