Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) has been a remarkable success, making global eradication of poliomyelitis a realistic goal. Attenuation is an important issue in the development and control of live vaccines. Recent progress in molecular biology has led to new insights into the structure, function and mechanisms of poliovirus attenuation.
