For here, many years earlier, there had been a tragic accident - the broken body of a woman was discovered on the rocks at the foot of the cliff. This was followed by the grisly discovery of two more bodies - a husband and wife - shot dead. But who had killed whom? Was it a suicide pact? A crime of passion? Or cold-blooded murder? Poirot delves back into a crime committed 15 years earlier and discovers that, when there is a distinct lack of physical evidence, it's just as well that â old sins leave long shadows.' This story is part of Agatha Christie's murder in retrospect series, a collection of stories which look at a crime several years after the fact, piecing together testimonials and witness reports to finally uncover the truth. This time we see Mrs Oliver's goddaughter, attempting to find out the truth about her deceased parents - who killed whom?.

A nursery rhyme figures tantalizingly in each of these novels, but there is nothing childlike about the dark secrets and darker deeds of some of the characters, nothing innocent about the murderers. Whether the detective featured is the delightful, sharp-eyed Miss Marple, the redoubtable Hercule Poirot, or Chief Inspector Taverner of Scotland Yard each one is challenged by an adversary worthy of a master of crime. Here is Agatha Christie at her best - baffling, daringly logical, and immensely entertaining. Source: Goodreads.

Appointment with Death places a domineering elderly invalid mother with her compliantly-captive children in tow on a tour of Israel. When the lady dies, all her children, their tour guides, and fellow tourists all come under suspicion. In Peril at End House a young orphan has inherited End House but when murder takes place during a party the list of suspects includes several of her close friends and even a pair of unknown suspects that Poirot identifies as J and K. Sad Cypress concludes the set with an aging aunt's death leading to the break up of her niece's engagement, the revelation of a long-concealed secret, and Poirot brought into the case to gather evidence to prove the innocence of the arrested suspect on trial. In all of the cases, as in Christie's writing in general, the focus is on characters and dialogue, not action. Sad Cypress extends that approach so that the story is told almost entirely in dialogue, including rapid fire interrogation exchanges during the trial, so while the story takes more pages it reads faster than the other two stories.
