Condition: Near fine. First printing of this beautiful adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic, with illustrations inspired by early modern woodblocks - a scarce Goodhue work in exceptional condition. With woodcut illustrations that look like an incunable had a brief but inspiring friendship with Aubrey Beardsley, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an attractive example of Bertram Godhue's Arts and Crafts sensibilities in book form. His bright, bold aesthetic is a perfect match for Emily Prime Delafield's interpretation of ALICE, which was first presented for The Society of Decorative Art with a cast of children. This is a very nice copy, rarely found so. 8'' x 5''. Original color pictorial boards. Red and yellow pictorial endpapers of Alice characters including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Illustrated in black and red. 90 pages. Binding with light toning to spine, mild edgewear; one tiny spot of soil to title. Leaves with occasional faint finger soil. Bright.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo. ix, [4], 2-89. List of characters. With four full-page plates, printed in red and black. Decorated endpapers printed in orange. Bound in cream paper-covered boards with striking full-color pictorial illustration on the front cover, and a detailed floral design on the rare cover, red lettering printed on spine. Dust-soiling to top edge; spine darkened, light wear to cover edges. Withal, a sturdy, presentable copy. First printing of the play compiled from Lewis Carroll works. Title page commentary: "Originally presented for the benefit of The Society of Decorative Art, at The Waldorf, New York. March thirteenth, 1897, and now for the first time printed."A trifecta of subject, printing and design in one book: Lewis Carroll's stories, exquisite printing by D. B. Updike, at his Merrymount Press, and charming illustrations by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Indeed, it's a sought-after title for being an early Merrymount effort, for having Goodhue illustrations, and for simply being an uncommon Lewis Carroll book. For more on Goodhue, please see Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. Architect and Master of Many Arts (AIA, 1925). A fragile book, offered here in handsome condition.

First Edition
First Edition. First Edition. 8vo., 5.25î x 8î. Original publisher's superb full color paper-covered boards featuring a vibrant pictorial front cover design and intricately patterned all-over color design on rear cover by noted designer and illustrator, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue who also contributed four illustrations in two colors. Spine with attractive lettering design motif in color. Endpapers in yellow and red, featuring various Alice characters. A very well-known and avidly collected Turn of the Century illustrated book, printed by D. B. Updike at the The Merrymount Press. Light rubbing to edges and very minor browning and spotting to cream covers and spine, some wear to spine tips and corners bumped. Very good, or better. Erased inscription to verso of frontispiece, some pencil markings to "Characters" page. Smith 30. One of Goodhueís hardest books to find and certainly one of his most collectible titles, beautifully printed by the Merrymount Press.
