Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Endpapers and stunning jacket art by J. Clemens Gretta (Gretter, 1904-1988) / matte paper frontispiece a line drawing by A.O. Scott (illustrator). This is edition 1944C-21 of the eleventh Hardy Boys mystery, as per Carpentieri & Mular Fifth Edition 2004. 23 HBs through "Melted Coins" to jacket front flap; seven Lone Rangers to jacket rear flap, 20 HBs to integral ad bound in at rear of book. Text pages on wartime paper are substantially but evenly age-browned, NOT fragile or crumbling. This harder-to-find jacket with its bold color palette is one of Gretta's greatest, though unfortunately this one is missing about half the jacket spine, and a previous owner also seems to have repaired a horizontal tear near bottom of front panel by applying a piece of "Magic" tape to RECTO, reducing jacket grade here to "fair." 213 followed by 2 pp. ads, including for 20 HBs through "Mystery of the Flying Express." Here reduced from $50.
