Quarto (10" x 7 3/4" x 1"), brown cloth with elaborately decorated spine with title & pictures of young Bunyan with book, plus front cover depicting JB as a young man feeling the gilded rays of the Divine emanating from Jesus on the Cross.surrounded by foliage--and weapons!--as borders: profusely illustrated with chromolithograph frontispiece (tissue guard) and around 100 B&W engravings lithographed as full-page plates and in-text images by Frederick Barnard and others (J. D. Linton, E. F. Brewtnall, Townley Green, Wm. Small, & Edw. G. Dalziel); tan floral endpapers; xi, [xii] +13 - 327 pages. Weight: 2 lbs. 7.4 oz. A wonderfully illustrated edition of this classic Christian allegory by John Bunyan. Bunyan (1628 - 1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. The principal illustrator, Frederick Barnard (1846-1896) was a prominent English illustrator known for his 450 B&W drawings for the Household Edition of the novels of Charles Dickens published by Chapman & Hall (1871-79). He also worked as an illustrator for Punch, The Illustrated London News, and Harper's Weekly. The other illustrators (J. D. Linton, E. F. Brewtnall, Townley Green, William Small, & E. G. Dalziel) were also well known, established, and widely appreciated. Linton (1840-1916) was a painter, watercolourist, and lithographer. Brewtnall (1846-1902) was a British genre, landscape and figure painter and illustrator. Green, R.I. (1836-1899) was a British watercolourist and illustrator. Small(1843-1929) was a Scottish illustrator and artist. Edw. Dalziel (1817-1905) was partners with his brother George as an expert woodengraver and co-owner of the prominent Dalziel Brothers firm which engraved all of the images in this handsomely produced volume. Solid, clean copy with brilliant frontispiece chromolithograph (though tissue guard separating the chromo from the title page has two blotches) and unfoxed pages and plates. Light uniform age-toning throughout. Light-to-moderate edgewear to cloth with bumped upper right corners. Slight splitting of paper along inner hinges but this hasn't weakened the book's text block or structural integrity. No previous owner's marks. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION! Tight, bright, clean copy with immaculate plates. Solid slipcase with minimal wear. Elaborate inlaid decorative binding.
