Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). This book has everything! It is flat-signed by the author on the title page, and it was given as a gift to the previous owner who was a member of the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Society 'in recognition and appreciation of your support to the University of Georgia School of Law during the 50th anniversary year of the founding of its alumni association.' There's a separate large insert stating those very words. Still more, there is a Celebrating 50 Years, University of Georgia Law School Association plate affixed to the front inside cover with the penned signature of the then Dean of the Law School, David E. Shipley. You can see the green covers of the book in the photos. They look perfectly clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. There's just a little crinkling at the spine ends. The six edges look perfect. The four corners as well. The page edges are very clean. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding is very solid with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. What more could you ask for? How about a terrific looking interior. The dark green inside covers and endpapers are very clean and free of wear. All of the pages are in excellent condition. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. There also nicely bright. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. The aforementioned plate is the only attachment. The author's signature is the only writing. You can see the dust jacket in the first couple of photos. It is very clean. It has only very minor wear, a thin crease off the front top edge just adjacent to the spine, and a small tear just off the top edge of the rear cover, also just adjacent to the spine. The edges and corners look very good. The flaps are in quite solid condition, no tears, no soiling. The jacket is not priced or clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. The author is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. The President of Utah State University, Kermit Hall, is quoted on the rear cover of the dust jacket: 'Clearly written, directly argued, and gifted with the simplicity of presentation that does justice to Lumpkin and to the development of the law in Georgia.' From the flaps of the jacket: 'This biography of Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867) details the life and work of the man whose senior judgeship on Georgia's Supreme Court spanned more than twenty years and included service as its first Chief Justice. Paul Hicks portrays Lumpkin as both a civic-minded professional and an evangelical Presbyterian reformer. Exploring Lumpkin's important contributions to the institutional development of the Georgia Supreme Court, Hicks discusses Lumpkin's opinions in cases ranging in concern from family conflicts to slavery. He also shows how Lumpkin cleared a way through the thicket of antiquated laws that threatened to strangle the growth of corporate banking and business in Georgia. Treated in depth as well are the evolution of his views on slavery and secession and his involvement in social and economic reform, including temperance, education, African American colonization, and industrialization. Hicks also covers Lumpkin's undergraduate days at the University of Georgia and Princeton, his experiences as a state legislator and successful lawyer, and his family life. Among the family members portrayed are Lumpkin's older brother, Wilson, a two-term governor of Georgia; and Lumpkin's son-in-law, Thomas R. R. Cobb, co-founder with Lumpkin of the University of Georgia Law School. Joseph Henry Lumpkin played an important role in the public life of Georgia during the formative era of American law and the age of sectionalism. Here is a full and compelling portrait of Lumpkin as an individual of both intellect and passion, on and off the bench.'. Signed by Author(s).
