Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Both Volumes are Stated First Printings. Who was Charles Schulz? 'Was he the man who suffered anxiety attacks, remembered slights for decades and put every ounce of existential angst into his comic strip, "Peanuts"? Was he the grandfatherly cartoonist hailed as a towering figure in American popular culture, who revolutionized the comic strip and created not only a multi-million dollar business, but a daily touchstone for fans worldwide? Or was he between the lines in "Peanuts" itself, in the melancholy of Charlie Brown, the exuberance of Snoopy, the intellectualism of Linus, the directness of Lucy and the bafflement of Peppermint Patty? The biographer David Michaelis was intrigued by the seeming divide between the popular image of Schulz, one the cartoonist fostered in interviews and talk-show appearances and on the other hand the depth of emotion manifested in the comic strip. The result of Michaelis' digging, "Schulz and Peanuts" was received with mostly glowing reviews, though Schulz's family, who agreed to interviews and gave the biographer access to papers has been sharply critical of the book's warts-and-all presentation.' What does that have to do with anything??? Not really that much, but I thought it might be of interest to a potential buyer that the books for sale here were purchased directly from the biographer David Michaelis who was moving at the time and had an estate sale. That was around five years ago. It was a very rainy morning and when I got to his house the sale had already been called off. However, he let me look at the books and I bought this slip-cased pair and some other individual ones that I'll get around to listing soon (all ones he used in his research). In fact, I had to remove many little post-its from the pages. Fortunately, they didn't leave any evidence of having been there and he didn't write anything anywhere in the book. Not even his name. Check out the photographs of the slipcase, the dust jacket, and the book itself. All are in very good to excellent condition. The slipcase is very solid. It doesn't have any tears. It does have a few light creases and a few tiny scuffs and bits of rubbing here and there. The dust jackets are NOT price-clipped. They are both clean and there aren't any tears. There are a couple of tiny scuffs on one volume. Both volumes have very minor rubbing at the spine ends. I've provided photographs. Both of the books are in exceptional condition. The covers are pristine. I didn't see any instances of any wear, not even at the corners or the edges or the spine ends. Both volumes are square and straight and tight, in other words very well-bound. The pages are exceptionally clean (and so are the page edges). I didn't see any soiling. They aren't toned. And as I said, there aren't any names or writing to be found. There aren't any markings or attachments. And I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. Beautiful books. 'The definitive collection of Charles M. Schulz's comic strip masterpiece. Dailies & Sundays.' From the front flap ' Charles Schulz was an innovative genius of American comics and also the marathon man, drawing panel after four-square panel, year after year, creating a fantasy world that connected to kids as well as adults and all based on powerful iconic characters who express deep feelings of loneliness and resentment and despair. The feeling that everything is against us. The craving for love. And an enormous earnestness about doing the right thing.' Garrison Keillor from his introduction.
