Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket as Issued. "Drawing on unconventional means of transformation, such as alchemy and magic, as a way to examine the metaphysical changes that occur when materials are used to conceptualize complex ideas, Now You See It--which includes work by Walead Beshty, Alexandra Bircken, Ceal Floyer, Tom Friedman, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Wade Guyton, Wolfgang Laib, Robert Morris, William O'Brien, Mitzi Pederson, Dieter Roth, Robert Ryman, Fred Sandback, Anna Sew Hoy, Gedi Sibony, Rudolf Stingel, Lawrence Weiner, Jennifer West and Erwin Wurm--proffers the notion that visual recognition alone is insufficient to determine an object's materiality. In this volume, published concurrently with an exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum, the question of materiality is recontextualized--through insightful essays by Aspen Art Museum Director Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson and Peter Eeley, Visual Arts Curator of the Walker Art Museum--as more than a mere struggle between content and form. Other contributions are by Paul Valéry and Jeremy Sigler.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. Thomas W. Benton: Artist/Activist chronicles the life and political activism of artist Thomas W. Benton with 150 images of his artwork. Benton?s silkscreen posters cataloged political movements and elections from 1968 to 2006 and are a powerful visual account of the issues and campaigns that shaped history. In addition to numerous candidates and issues in Aspen, Colorado, Benton created political posters for presidential candidates George McGovern and Gary Hart, and against President Nixon. The book includes never-before-published images of the Aspen Wallposters, a collaboration of Benton?s art and Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson?s writing in that promoted their Freak Power movement. Benton?s later works, including abstract silkscreens, monotypes and paintings, are also explored in relation to the artist?s life and philosophies. The book also includes Benton?s commercial work in Aspen as a signmaker/printmaker, his architectural projects in Colorado and ten poems by close friend and lyricist Joe Henry. Daniel Joseph Watkins is a writer and curator who lives in Aspen, Colorado. He grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, and earned a degree in history and international studies at Baker University. Watkins created and operated the Gonzo Museum in Aspen, CO and has curated shows for BOA/SOA gallery in Los Angeles and The Lawrence Art Center in Lawrence, Kansas. He worked with the William S. Burroughs estate to curate a show of Burroughs' art in Aspen and has organized gallery shows for both emerging and established contemporary artists. In 2011, he published his first book Thomas W. Benton Artist/Activist, which won the Colorado Book Award.
