Condition: Very Good. . Penguin, 1948, 1st reprint. spine rubbed and darkened, some spotting on cover; contents near-mint; 169+6pp ads. Most of us know too little of the way our bodies work, and are liable in that state of comparative ignorance to become the victims of groundless anxieties about ourselves. In this compact and authoritative survey Mr Kenneth Walker sets forth in plain language the most up-to-date knowledge on the functioning of the human body, and reminds us too how profoundly the mind influences the working of the body. Starting from the cell, the basis of human as of all life, he describes the nature and work of the digestive, circulatory, excretory, locomotor and nervous systems: the part that food plays in our lives; how we breathe: the functions of the special senses and the physiology of sensation; the chemistry of the body and the glandular system; and the processes of reproduction. A number of sketches in the text illustrate special points. 7x4¼in. . . . . Books ship from the US and Ireland.

Large octavo (8 1/2 x 11 inches), single issue, mimeographed, self wrappers, stapled. The club magazine of The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society. The first issue, titled SHANGRI-LA, was dated March-April 1940. Following the third issue (dated July 1941), the magazine changed its name to SHANGRI-L'AFFAIRES (38 issues were published under this title between December 1941 and November 1947). The name reverted to SHANGRI-LA with the issue dated January-February 1948 (as did the numbering of the issues). This long-running fanzine was revived in the late 1950s as SHANGRI-L'AFFAIRES and was one of the most important of the amateur magazines published during the 1950s and 1960s. Pavlat and Evans, Fanzine Index (1965), p. 106-07. Warner, All Our Yesterdays, pp. 285-86. Text paper age-darkened, staples removed, holes punched in left margins for three-ring binder, a very good copy. (#92573).
