Softcover. Condition: Good. First , 1st P edition. Transforming the power in Eleanor's story to your story starts now. Whatever the scale of your rendezvous with destiny, the fact remains it is up to you to live it. Eleanor's story is a do-it-yourself guide that shows us how to accomplish many things. From a childhood plagued with drunks and drama queens, Eleanor must now discard her dependency on Franklin and face off with her grand dame mother-in-law. Refusing to cave in to society's rules, Eleanor's exuberant style, wavering voice, and lack of Hollywood beauty are fodder for the media. First Lady for thirteen years, Eleanor redefines and exploits this role to a position of power. Using her influence, she champions Jews, African Americans, and women. The audacity of this woman to live out her own destiny challenges us to do the same. After all, it's not about Eleanor. Her story is history. Her life shows us how to live.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Located sixty-five miles northeast of the state capital of Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, has seen a number of notable people pass through the community, including such Indiana legends as Cole Porter and James Dean. It has also, however, been home to racial strife, including the infamous lynching of two African American men in 1930. Marion was also the hometown of a young black man who would do much to help restore harmony among blacks and whites in the community. Going over All the Hurdles: A Life of Oatess Archey, written by John A. Beineke, who lived in Madison and was one of Archey's students, is the fifth volume in the IHS Press's youth biography series. The book explores the career of Archey, the first African American to be elected sheriff in Indiana. Raised in Marion, Indiana, the young Archey and his loving family lived under the cloud of the notorious 1930 lynching. A star athlete, including winning the state championship in the high hurdles in 1955, Archey endured discrimination when he attempted to return to his hometown after college and tried to secure a teaching job with the Marion schools. Instead of teaching in a classroom, Archey was forced to take a janitorial position with the school system. He later rose to become a beloved teacher and coach, before moving on to a career in law enforcement with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He returned to Marion in triumph and served as a popular sheriff for Grant County. As author Beineke notes, the word hurdle is used in this book "both symbolically and athletically. As a symbol, it will embody the barriers that Archey had to overcome throughout his life. The hurdle, as an obstacle in a track-and-field event, will also represent a moment of achievement that exemplified his entire life. Archey not only went over hurdles, but he taught others how to go over them, too. That is how a life truly makes a difference."

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Product Description This new history of modern China begins in the year 1800, with an account of China's approach to the threats of foreign imperialism and internal rebellion. The main themes of this late imperial period include the Opium Wars and their consequences, the rise and defeat of the mid-nineteenth-century rebellions and the frustrating attempts at 'self-strengthening' As the twentieth century begins, the book offers an evaluation of the 1911 revolution and the May Fourth Movement which produced Chen Duxiu's attack on Confucianism. The main focus for the following period is the history of the Guomindang and the Chinese Communist party until the victory of the latter in 1949. The final section surveys the People's Republic of China, comparing the estimates that have been made of the leadership of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping and the success - or otherwise - of the policies with which they have been associated. Written for the non-specialist and for the student looking for an authoritative introduction to recent scholarly work on China, this illustrated history provides a reliable and highly stimulating account of an endlessly fascinating country whose development is of paramount importance for the West. From Library Journal Ironically, the strength of this book is not in its illustrations, since they are often misplaced in the text. Well-known British historian Roberts does, however, provide excellent references and a lively discussion of China's transition from a dynastic system to a Communist regime. Especially interesting is his presentation of the roles of Western Christianity and Japanese aggression in the emergence of Chinese nationalism. The last three chapters?dealing with the political struggles within the Chinese Communist Party from its early days to the present?are not well developed, although they do provide important information about China's powerbrokers (e.g., Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Lin Biao, Deng Xiaoping, and Hua Guofeng). A solid companion to Colin Mackerras's Dictionary of the Politics of the People's Republic of China (LJ 5/1/98), which intermingles history and current events but does not have Roberts's engaging style.?Peggy Spitzer Christoff, Oak Park, ILCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Roberts, a specialist in East Asian history, has provided an informative and easily digestible survey of the past 200 years of Chinese history. Unlike many Western historians, Roberts generally avoids the trap of viewing events through a Eurocentric prism; he frequently reminds us that an immense nation such as China can resist outside influences while following internal dynamics. General readers will find the text easy to follow, yet historians who wish to gain a more specific knowledge of Chinese history will not be disappointed. A perfect public library choice. Jay Freeman About the Author J. A. G. Roberts is Principal Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, specializing in the history of China and Japan.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Right up until the 19th century, physicians and philosophers regarded sleep as a state of near-oblivion in which there was no mental activity, a kind of halfway stage between wakefulness and death. For the Victorians, therefore, when anaesthesia was first practised, it was commonly seen as traumatic-for doctors were being asked to induce a condition looked upon as partial death. Viewed with suspicion, many feared that they would never wake again, or that they would lose their faculties on a permanent basis, even become insane. Yet, especially after Queen Victoria allowed its administration to her during childbirth, its use to block out pain became widespread. This engaging and entertaining book traces the social, medical and criminal history of chloroform, from early medical practices to create oblivion through the discovery of chloroform and its discovery, its use and misuse in the 19th century, to the present. Today chloroform is no longer used as an anaesthetic, but has a multitude of uses in industry and medical research, including a role in DNA profiling. A by-product of the chlorination of water, we inhale infinitesimal amounts of chloroform every time we have a shower.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. To thirteen-year-old Sarah Caldwell, everything in Indiana is dark--the bug-filled cabin, the woods engulfing the farm, and especially the future. She is far from her beloved sister, Rachel, who stayed in North Carolina when their family moved. Their widowed father has married Eliza, a young Quaker schoolteacher, and Sarah has just discovered that Eliza is an abolitionist! Sarah believes she must tell her father about the secret, unlawful activities Eliza's sewing circle performs at Levi and Catherine Coffin's home. Yet when Sarah learns her sister will be visiting Indiana with her husband and baby, happiness and anticipation overcome her concern about Eliza. Rachel's family soon arrives, bringing Polly, a slave girl about Sarah's age. Thrown together to do farm chores and look after Rachel's baby, the two girls, white and black, free and enslaved, slowly develop a friendship. Between Polly's company and that of her extended family, Sarah's world brightens. Meanwhile, Sarah begins to question her beliefs about slavery. When bounty hunters nearly kidnap Polly, Sarah worries for her safety. Tensions mount within the cramped household as it appears that her brother-in-law may trade Polly's future for his family's prosperity. Ultimately, Sarah is faced with a bitter decision that could change forever the lives of her family.

As chief test pilot for BAC in the 1960s, Brian Trubshaw was closely involved with the Anglo-French Concorde programme and flew the supersonic aircraft on its maiden flight in 1969, remaining a key member of the test programme after the aircraft entered airline service in 1967. This close association with Concorde affords him his unique position in offering the inside story of the aircraft, from the early days of its planning in the 1950s, through design and pre-flight testing, maiden flight and demonstrations, to certification and airline service. He also covers many other aspects of the programme, from the cripplingly high development and construction costs to sales and post-delivery modification. The book reviews Concorde's 43-year service record with British Airways and Air France, along with the prospects for its continuation in airline service into the 21st century. The author also offers his views on the next generation of supersonic passenger transport aircraft.

Softcover. Condition: Good. In The Atlantis Syndrome , Paul Jordan maps the invention, abandonment, and rediscovery of the concept of Atlantis from Plato's invention of Atlantis in his moral tale of the ruining of Athens, to the present day 'alternative archaeologies' which use his analogy as their foundation. Jordan argues that contemporary archaeology has gone far beyond the need for an Atlantis to explain the distant human past and outlines contemporary archaeological thinking about human evolution, prehistory and classical history and society. Ultimately he takes in turn several of the more popular books on the Atlantis theory and critically analyses their evidence and approach. In this way he effectively shoots down several modern heroes of the modern cult of Atlantology, looking at the underlying motivations for their writings. He also warns of the `colonialist and missionary condescension' enshrined in their hyperdiffusionist ideas. This is a fascinating and much needed contextual analysis of the `Atlantis Syndrome' and should be read by anyone interested in this subject.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Robert Walpole was Britain's first Prime Minister and one of the great political figures of the eighteenth century. His years in power, 1721-42, saw the growth of unparalleled political stability and the gradual rise of the House of Commons as the focus of power. In the twenty years that he was Prime Minister Walpole was the chief architect of the Whig supremacy which laid the foundations for modern Britain. He secured the Hanoverian dynasty through his close relationship with George II and did his best to endear the population to their Germanic monarch. Although they were later to part with bitterness on both sides, there is no doubt that Walpole had achieved the seemingly impossible task of harmonising the interests of people, parliament and monarch in a way which became the model for all future British Prime Ministers. This new study of Walpole's years in power paints a lively picture of Hanoverian England and the world of politics and patronage. The important literary culture of Augustan England - Pope, Swift, Gray and Johnson - is also explored for its rich vein of political satire and commentary. The book ends with Walpole's fall from power in 1742 while Britain was at war with Spain and France, a war which Walpole opposed but which George II was determined to pursue for his own interests. Walpole's opposition to the war ended his career but bolstered George's image with his subjects as he led a victorious army of British, Hanoverian and Austrian troops in battle, the last British monarch to do so.

For twenty years, Hoosier comic Red Skelton entertained millions of viewers who gathered around their television sets to delight in the antics of such notable characters as Freddie the Freeloader, Clem Kaddiddlehopper, Cauliflower McPugg, and Sheriff Deadeye. Noted film historian Wes D. Gehring examines the man behind the characters--someone who never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Gehring delves into Skelton's hardscrabble life with a shockingly dysfunctional family in the southern Indiana community of Vincennes, his days on the road on the vaudeville circuit, the comedian's early success on radio, his up-and-down movie career with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and his sometimes tragic personal life.

Captured by the British, he was held for the rest of the War, before being convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials in 1946. Desmond Zwar collaborated with Col. Burton C. Andrus, who was Commandant of Nuremberg Prison during the Trials, on his book The Infamous of Nuremberg, and with Col. Eugene K. Bird, U.S. Governor of Spandau Prison, where Hess was held for more than 40 years, on The Loneliest Man in the World. For reasons of practicality, neither of these books told the full story, which is revealed here for the first time. As well as his interviews with Hess and others, Zwar tells the story of how this book came to be written, including how Hess hid proofs in his underpants, how Bird was fired by the U.S. Army, and how the CIA tried to recover the transcripts.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Minnesota Book Award Winner! The smoke had just cleared from the last volley of musketry at Gettysburg. Nearly 70 percent of the First Minnesota regiment lay dead or dying on the field--one of the greatest losses of any unit engaged in the Civil War. The significance of this July 2, 1863, battle at Gettysburg is widely known, but the harrowing details of the First's heroic stand that stopped a furious rebel assault have long been buried. In Pale Horse at Plum Run Brian Leehan brings the full story of the First at Gettysburg to light as he examines personal accounts, eyewitness reports, and official records to construct a remarkably detailed and compelling narrative. "Brian Leehan's account of the First Minnesota on Cemetery Ridge is the most detailed and complete I have read. His exhaustive research and compelling narrative are impressive and offer a much fuller understanding of the regiment's extraordinary feats." -- Richard Moe, author of The Last Full Measure: The Life and Death of the First Minnesota Volunteers.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1853-84), is acknowledged to have been the most intelligent and probably the most interesting of Queen Victoria's four sons. He was the youngest and a strong-willed attractive character, with an immense thirst for life. He was also, however, the first haemophilia sufferer in the royal family and endured continual ill health; as if haemophilia was not enough, he was also epileptic. In this biography, Charlotte Zeepvat has drawn on sources to reveal a compelling human story which also touches on the wider worlds of late 19th-century Oxford and of literature, art and politics in the Victorian period. In particular, it examines the question of haemophilia and the royal family. There are many questions to answer, such as when did the Queen and Prince Albert realize their youngest son was ill and how much did they understand of his illness? Some of Leopold's early attacks were described as "rheumatism" - was this an attempt to keep the truth concealed or a genuine misunderstanding? The book also presents a full and balanced picture of Leopold's relationship with his mother. Letters already published provide snapshots of individual quarrels between mother and son but no one has yet considered the relationship as a whole. Finally it eamines Leopold's life at Oxford, the varied and interesting friendships he developed there (with, among others, Charles Dodgson - "Lewis Carroll" - John Ruskin and Oscar Wilde), his political views and the importance of his work as unofficial secretary to the Queen.
