Lewis's books about the magical and mystical land of Narnia, country of Aslan the Lion and the Talking Beasts, which was first discovered by the children who went through the back of the wardrobe in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This time the struggle is between young King Tirian and the forces of evil, as represented by Shift the Ape and his poor dupe, Puzzle the donkey. Shift dresses Puzzle up in a lion-skin and passes him off as the great Aslan himself, corrupting the animals, slaughtering the talking trees, and destroying the harmony of the kingdom. Jill and Eustace, Peter, Edmund and Lucy all come to help in the great battles which follow, and before he story comes to its glorious, and final, ending you will meet again many favourite characters from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and the other books. Clive Staples Lewis was born on 29 November 1898 at Belfast. His father was a solicitor and his mother (who died when he was a child) was a clergyman's daughter. He had one brother a few years older than himself, and when both were at home they spent much of their time together inventing imaginary lands and writing about them - though not at all in the romantic way we would expect of the future creator of Narnia . . . The seven Chronicles of Narnia, which were published annually from 1950 to 1956, have already taken their place among the great children's classics. But like the other great books which are enjoyed by all ages, the Narnian stories were really written to please the author himself. "I wrote the books I should have liked to read," Lewis has said. "That's always been my reason for writing. People won't write the books I want, so I have to do it for myself," and he insists that the proper reason for writing a children's story is "because a children's story is the best art form for something you have to say". Besides his works of literary scholarship, Lewis is best known for various books on theology, the most famous being The Screwtape Letters - from an old devil to a younger one on the best means of tempting mankind, which of course was intended to help his readers to be on their guard against the more cunningly hidden temptations by which we are beset. And also for his two romances of other worlds, Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra, perhaps the finest and most poetical stories of visits to Mars and Venus ever written. C. S. Lewis died in 1963, soon after his retirement. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
