Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Paul Chowder is a poet, but he's fallen out of love with writing poems. He hasn't fallen out of love with his ex-girlfriend Roz, though. In fact he misses her desperately. As he struggles to come to terms with Roz's new relationship with a doctor, Paul turns to his acoustic guitar for comfort and inspiration, and fills his days writing protest songs, going to Quaker meetings, struggling through Planet Fitness workouts, wondering if he could become a techno DJ, and experimenting with becoming a cigar smoker. Written in Baker's beautifully unconventional prose, and scored with musical influences from Debussy to Tracy Chapman to Paul himself, Travelling Sprinkler is an enchanting, hilarious, and deeply necessary novel. 'I think the job of the novelist is to write about interesting things, including things that might not seem all that interesting at first glance, and to offer evidence that life is worth living' Nicholson Baker. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The perfect gift book for those who want to know the meaning of life or the fastest running speed of a chicken. Based on the questions texted to Any Questions Answered (AQA), number 63336, and the answers given by the service. For example: Q. How many baked beans would you need to place end to end to reach the moon?A. The moon's average distance from Earth is 385,000 km. So it would take 32,033,583,333 baked beans, end to end, to reach the moon. Q. What are the three English words that end in GRY?A. There are only two common English words that end in GRY: angry and hungry. It is a well known hoax if someone asks you to try and find the third word. Q. Is it normal to want to have sex with a dog?A. It is normal to be sexually attracted to a dog, but only if you are a dog yourself - in which case AQA is very impressed by your ability to use a mobile phone. Q. What is the opposite of a camel?A. The opposite of a camel is a soap dish. Quality examples (not the octopus sucker sort) have dips not humps, and most of their time is spent around water. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Faces are endlessly fascinating. Their diversity, their versatility and their unrivalled ability to communicate make them an enigma. Artists and scientists have been trying to unravel the mysteries of what makes a face and how it functions for thousands of years. Where does the face begin and end? It is a slender and fragile boundary, where interior and exterior worlds meet. It is part of the body and yet it is elevated and fetishised. It is where our spirit and personality manifest themselves. The closer we come to an anatomical understanding of the face, the more impenetrable it seems to become. Future Face looks at the physical characteristics of the face and at how we read faces and use them to express our thoughts and emotions. Creatively juxtaposing historical and contemporary material, Sandra Kemp takes us on a journey through the myriad ways the face has been depicted and analysed, altered and reconstructed from pre-history to the present. It encompasses the physical - skin, bones and tissue - and the conceptual, where faces are re-imagined in the virtual-reality. Kemp invites us to consider perhaps the most urgent question about the face today - whether it will continue to be shaped by genetics and evolution, or whether we will ourselves determine its appearance in the future? She asks whether our self-image can keep pace with ever-accelerating technological advances, from airbrushing and digital manipulation to cosmetic surgery and face transplants. Do we face a crisis of identity now that realms of science fiction are within the reach of possibility? Published to accompany a major exhibition by the Wellcome Trust, Sandra Kemp's ambitious and wide-ranging study explores questions around the face, its representation and function. She unpicks some complex issues using a rich mix of intriguing material, drawing on art, technology, medicine and psychology. The book also contains a complementary chapter on the psychology of the face by Vicki Bruce and one on medical technology by Alf Linney. Future Face is a provocative and at times unnerving exploration of the human face. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Nottingham, 1997. Sarah Bone, Labour MP, is about to face the election battle of her life. At least she's had some good publicity. On the night Sarah celebrates the overturning of Ed Clark's conviction for murdering a policeman and his wife - her personal triumph - he sexually assaults her and brags that he did kill them, and more. As the murdered policeman's sister Polly Bolton demands justice, Sarah's obsession with the case deepens. Is she responsible for a terrible injustice? Nick Cane is fresh out of the same prison as Ed Clark, having served five years for growing wholesale amounts of cannabis in the caves beneath his old flat. A former teacher and political activist, Nick was the love of Sarah Bone's life when they met at university, but they haven't seen each other for thirteen years. Nick's only career option now is to drive a cab (illegally) for his brother's firm, where he discovers Ed Clark again, this time as a colleague, and has a love affair with Polly Bolton. Nick has a mystery of his own eating away at him: who told the police about his dope-growing operation five years ago? The old chemistry still sparks as Nick reconnects with Sarah. Can an MP keep her relationship with an ex-con hidden from the media as together they attempt to expose Ed Clarke's guilt? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Unexpectedly moving and luminously wise, Tennyson's Gift is the funniest novel ever written about a Victorian Poet Laureate. In July 1864, a corner of the Isle of Wight is buzzing with literary and artistic creativity. A morose Tennyson is reciting 'Maud' to empty sofas; the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron is white-washing the roses for visual effect and; the mismatched couple, actress Ellen Terry and painter G. F. Watts are thrown into the company of the remarkable Lorenzo Fowler, the American phrenologist, and his daughter Jessie. Enter mathematician Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll), known to Jessie as the 'fiendish pedagogue', and Lynne Truss's wonderfully imaginative cocktail of Victorian seriousness and riotous farce begins to take flight. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Long-dead Lord Byron started it. The rock star of his age. But a poet with about as much relevance to the blood grudge struggle that marks modern life for most of humanity, as he has to the practice of sliding down snowy slopes on planks of wood. And yet, it was thanks to Byron that Itchy ended up living in Chamonix Mont Blanc, the death-sport capital of the world, among the high mountains and low morals. In the intervening years he has tried hard with alcohol and adrenaline to numb a past he can't atone for. Now a serial rapist is stalking Cham's tourist-thronged streets, haunting the same shadows as Itchy and triggering an obsession which will lead him far from Europe's zenith, to the depths of the valley and himself. The promise of Jonathan Trigell's first novel, Boy A, is fully realised in this evocation of the world of extreme sports, where the reckless violence of a callow man?s life comes back to haunt him. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014 The Million Copy Best-Seller Rosemary's young, just at college, and she's decided not to tell anyone a thing about her family. So we're not going to tell you too much either: you'll have to find out for yourselves, round about page 77, what it is that makes her unhappy family unlike any other. Rosemary is now an only child, but she used to have a sister the same age as her, and an older brother. Both are now gone - vanished from her life. There's something unique about Rosemary's sister, Fern. And it was this decision, made by her parents, to give Rosemary a sister like no other, that began all of Rosemary's trouble. So now she's telling her story: full of hilarious asides and brilliantly spiky lines, it's a looping narrative that begins towards the end, and then goes back to the beginning. Twice. It's funny, clever, intimate, honest, analytical and swirling with ideas that will come back to bite you. We hope you enjoy it, and if, when you're telling a friend about it, you do decide to spill the beans about Fern - it's pretty hard to resist - don't worry. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1974, the homeless Miss Shepherd moved her broken down van into Alan Bennett's garden. Deeply eccentric and stubborn to her bones, Miss Shepherd was not an easy tenant. And Bennett, despite inviting her in the first place, was a reluctant landlord. And yet she lived there for fifteen years. This account of those years was first published in 1989 in the London Review of Books. The play premiered in 1999, directed by Nicholas Hytner and starring Dame Maggie Smith, who reprise their roles in this new film adaptation. Shot on location at Bennett's house, Alex Jennings plays the author, alongside household names including Frances de la Tour, Jim Broadbent and Dominic Cooper. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Clive Dunlop was a masseur of exceptional talents. His 'services' were much in demand amongst the great and the good and after his untimely death at the age of 34 they - the film stars and politicians, the writers and publishers, the TV pundits and celebrity chefs - are gathered for his memorial service. The conduct of the service is a great worry for the priest taking the service but it proves to be a test for the congregation. This is Alan Bennett at his absolute best with an exceptional satire. It is a perfect work of fiction but it will give readers the extra frisson of pleasure of identifying many of the characters, including even the masseur. This is a small masterpiece. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Gamblers have been trying to figure out how to game the system since our ancestors first made wagers over dice fashioned from knucklebones: in revolutionary Paris, the 'martingale' strategy was rumoured to lead to foolproof success at roulette ; today, professional gamblers are using cutting-edge techniques to tilt the odds in their favour. Science is giving us the competitive edge over opponents, casinos and bookmakers. But is there such a thing as a perfect bet? The Perfect Bet looks beyond probability and statistics to examine how wagers have inspired a plethora of new disciplines - spanning chaos theory, machine learning and game theory - which are not just revolutionising gambling, but changing our fundamental notions about chance, randomness and luck. Explaining why poker is gaming's last bastion of human superiority over AI, how methods originally developed for the US nuclear programme are helping pundits predict sports results and why a new breed of algorithms are losing banks millions, The Perfect Bet has the inside track on any wager you'd care to place. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. How will the world be powered in ten years' time? Not by fossil fuels. Energy experts are all saying the same thing: solar photovoltaics (PV) is our future. Reports from universities, investment banks, international institutions and large investors agree. It's not about whether the switch from fossil fuels to solar power will happen, but when. Solar panels are being made that will last longer than ever hoped; investors are seeing the benefits of the long-term rewards provided by investing in solar; in the Middle East, a contractor can now offer solar-powered electricity far cheaper than that of a coal-fired power station. The Switch tracks the transition away from coal, oil and gas to a world in which the limitless energy of the sun provides much of the energy the 10 billion people of this planet will need. It examines both the solar future and how we will get there, and the ways in which we will provide stored power when the sun isn't shining. We learn about artificial photosynthesis from a start-up in the US that is making petrol from just CO2 and sunlight; ideas on energy storage are drawn from a company in Germany that makes batteries for homes; in the UK, a small company in Swindon has the story of wind turbines; and in Switzerland, a developer shows how we can use hydrogen to make 'renewable' natural gas for heating. Told through the stories of entrepreneurs, inventors and scientists from around the world, and using the latest research and studies, The Switch provides a positive solution to the climate change crisis, and looks to a brighter future ahead. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A witty, entertaining, impassioned guide to perfect punctuation, for everyone who cares about precise writing. Not a primer but a 'zero tolerance' manual for direct action. A panda walked into a cafe. He ordered a sandwich, ate it, then pulled out a gun and shot the waiter. 'Why?' groaned the injured man. The panda shrugged, tossed him a badly punctuated wildlife manual and walked out. And sure enough, when the waiter consulted the book, he found an explanation. 'Panda,' ran the entry for his assailant. 'Large black and white mammal native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.' We see signs in shops every day for "Banana's" and even "Gateaux's". Competition rules remind us: "The judges decision is final." Now, many punctuation guides already exist explaining the principles of the apostrophe; the comma; the semi-colon. These books do their job but somehow punctuation abuse does not diminish. Why? Because people who can't punctuate don't read those books! Of course they don't! They laugh at books like those! Eats, Shoots and Leaves adopts a more militant approach and attempts to recruit an army of punctuation vigilantes: send letters back with the punctuation corrected. Do not accept sloppy emails. Climb ladders at dead of night with a pot of paint to remove the redundant apostrophe in "Video's sold here". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'Oh Norman,' said the Queen, 'the prime minister doesn't seem to have read any Hardy. Perhaps you could find him one of our old paperbacks on his way out.' Had the dogs not taken exception to the strange van parked in the royal grounds, the Queen might never have learnt of the Westminster travelling library's weekly visits to the palace. But finding herself at its steps, she goes up to apologise for all the yapping and ends up taking out a novel by Ivy Compton-Burnett, last borrowed in 1989. Duff read though it proves to be, upbringing demands she finish it and, so as not to appear rude, she withdraws another. This second, more fortunate choice of book awakens in Her Majesty a passion for reading so great that her public duties begin to suffer. And so, as she devours work by everyone from Hardy to Brookner to Proust to Samuel Beckett, her equerries conspire to bring the Queen's literary odyssey to a close. Subversive and highly enjoyable, The Uncommon Reader offers the perfect argument for reading, written by one of its great champions, Alan Bennett. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. When Chris Kraus, an unsuccessful artist pushing 40, spends an evening with a rogue academic named Dick, she falls madly and inexplicably in love, enlisting her husband in her haunted pursuit. Dick proposes a kind of game between them, but when he fails to answer their letters Chris continues alone, transforming an adolescent infatuation into a new form of philosophy. Blurring the lines of fiction, essay and memoir, Chris Kraus's novel was a literary sensation when it was first published in 1997. Widely considered to be the most important feminist novel of the past two decades, I Love Dick is still essential reading; as relevant, fierce and funny as ever. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
