Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In Why You Can Build It Like That, John Zukowsky examines buildings from the past half century or so that pushed the boundaries of what was architecturally acceptable when they were built. 100 striking international examples of modern architecture are categorized into thematic chapters that reflect form as well as society. Zukowsky explores the history of these buildings and their makers, presenting relevant biographical factors and socio-cultural influences that impacted on the distinctive designs. The book includes the works of heroic early modernist architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright, alongside long-established architectural firms such as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It also features mavericks of the past and present Bruce Goff, Shin Takamatsu and Shigeru Ban and singular architectural wonders that reflect their own times. Readers will find out why all the featured buildings look the way they do, and why they were created when and where they were. Zukowskys original text unravels the rich and complex stories that exist behind the design of some of the worlds more unconventional monuments, revealing exactly why each building is one of a kind. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Critical essays are the basic mode of expression that students of literature at universities and colleges are expected to master, yet they are given no special instruction in this discipline. To make good the deficiency, Philip Hobsbaum demonstrates that there are techniques in writing criticism which can be both taught and learned. He himself learned his craft from such major figures as F.R. Leavis and William Empson, and has had many years' experience as a professional critic and a teacher of literature. After defining the uses of criticism, he provides invaluable guidance on such topics as what to say about a poem, English prose style and structuring an essay, in each case taking examples from the works of well-known authors. Here at last is the means of bridging the gap between the student as reader and the student as writer. Philip Hobsbaum is Titular Professor of English Literature at the University of Glasgow. He has published four collections of poems and six books of literary criticism, including A Reader's Guide to Charles Dickens, A Reader's Guide to D.H. Lawrence and A Reader's Guide to Robert Lowell, all from Thames and Hudson. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1874 Claude Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise caused uproar among the critics and a revolution in painting. His inventiveness was inexhaustible: with paintings of haystacks, poplars and, finally, the enchanting water-lilies of Giverny, Monet captured light in all its fleeting qualities. At last, almost blind 'I fear the dark more than death' he feverishly produced near-abstract landscapes of water and reflection, a vision of nature that paved the way for the art of our own times. Including hundreds of beautiful reproductions and contemporary illustrations, comprehensive text, documentary witness accounts and letters, this pocket-sized book is perfect both for the lover of Monet and of the history of Impressionism. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In the age of revolutions, at the end of the eighteenth century, the mental and spiritual life of North America and Europe began to undergo an historic and irreversible change. The ideas of spontaneity, direct expression and natural feeling transformed the arts, encouraging artists to explore the extremes in human nature, from heroism to insanity and despair. Widely praised on first publication and now revised, William Vaughans classic study analyses the achievement of the leading artists of the day masters such as Goya, Blake, Gericault, Turner and Delacroix and sets in context a host of fascinating figures in painting, sculpture and architecture: Palmer, Runge, Soane, Gros, Overbeck, Schinkel, Flaxman, Pugin, Bingham and many more. Here is the real history of the Vikings - Danes, Norse and Swedes. They ploughed the seas in their long boats, voyaging as far as Greenland and discovering America. They colonized Iceland, pillaged Ireland, and put France to fire and sword. They sailed to the gates of Constantinople and seized the throne of the Tsars. Finally, under William the Conqueror, their descendants subjugated England. They sailed out of history into the realm of legend. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. From the Purism of the 1920s to the great mystical paintings of the 1950s this volume takes us on a journey through the life and career of an artist who turned paranoia into a way of life. His anarchic visions foreshadowed many preoccupations of art in the late twentieth century, not only in the realm of painting but also in the fields of cinema, architecture and installation art. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Egon Schiele lived in Vienna during its last years as capital of the declining Habsburg empire. Rejected by his family and hounded by society for his interest in young girls, he expressed through his art a deep and bewildering loneliness and an obsession with sexuality, death and decay. Schiele was only twenty-eight when he died, yet he left behind him a body of work that sustains a huge public reputation and a myth. This book sets out to examine both.
