Doris Lessing, 1919 als Tochter eines britischen Offiziers in Kermanshah/ Persien geboren, wuchs auf einer Farm in Südrhodesien auf und kam im Alter von dreißig Jahren nach England, wo sie 1950 ihren ersten Roman »Afrikanische Tragödie« publizierte.
